Sasaab Camp Samburu: Moroccan Luxury Perched Above the Ewaso Nyiro River

Whitewashed arches. Carved cedar doorways. An infinity pool suspended above a river where elephants drink at dusk. Sasaab Camp Samburu is not a typical Kenya safari camp, and that is entirely the point. 🌍

Built into a hillside above the Ewaso Nyiro River on the Westgate Community Conservancy, Sasaab brings the architecture of Morocco into the semi-arid beauty of northern Kenya. The result feels genuinely unexpected, which is exactly what makes it worth the journey north. Trunktrails Safaris regularly recommends Sasaab to guests who want something more than a tented camp with a familiar formula. Our tours and safaris in northern Kenya consistently place Samburu at the top of the list for luxury travellers and honeymooners who want the wild, but want it beautifully framed.

What Makes Sasaab Camp Different from Other Samburu Lodges?

Most tented camps in Samburu follow a familiar formula: canvas on raised platforms, neutral earth tones, an open-sided dining banda. Sasaab breaks that mould completely.

The camp was designed with Moroccan kasbahs as the visual reference. Think whitewashed walls, carved timber ceilings, Berber lanterns, and handwoven cushions in ochre and deep blue. Each of the nine luxury suites opens onto a private veranda with an unobstructed view of the Ewaso Nyiro far below.

What makes Sasaab architecturally unusual is not just the aesthetic, but the positioning. The camp sits elevated on a ridge, so guests look down across the entire river valley rather than along the bank. At night, lantern light spills from the terraces into the dark bush, and the sounds of the river rise from 30 metres below.

Sasaab is owned and operated by The Safari Collection, the Nairobi-based group also behind Giraffe Manor and Angama Mara. Their approach is high-service and low-density: nine suites means a maximum of 18 guests at any time, which means the camp never feels crowded.

What Does the Moroccan Design Look Like Inside the Suites?

Each suite at Sasaab is a separate stone and canvas structure built directly into the hillside. The interiors combine traditional Samburu craft with North African design details that feel considered rather than themed.

You will find:

  • King-size beds under carved wooden headboards with hand-stitched linen
  • Private plunge pools on each veranda, positioned for the same river panorama as the main infinity pool
  • Zanzibari chests and kilim-style rugs across polished concrete floors
  • Open-air bathrooms with freestanding bathtubs and outdoor showers framed by bougainvillea
  • Wooden louvred shutters that open the suite walls fully to the hillside breeze

The main lodge holds the same architectural language: arched doorways, a central courtyard fountain, a library set into carved niches, and a terrace commanding the full sweep of the Ewaso Nyiro valley. ✨

This is one of the few safari lodges in Kenya where the architecture itself becomes part of the experience, not simply the backdrop to it.

What Wildlife Can You See on Safari at Sasaab Camp?

Sasaab sits within the Westgate Community Conservancy, which abuts Samburu National Reserve to the north. Guests game-drive through both areas, giving access to a wildlife corridor that follows the Ewaso Nyiro for more than 60 km.

The signature species in this part of Kenya are the Samburu Special Five: animals found here but rarely, if ever, in the more visited southern parks.

SpeciesWhy It Is SpecialBest Sighting Spot

Beyond the Special Five, elephants cross the Ewaso Nyiro daily near camp. Leopards hunt the riverine woodland after dark. A resident lion pride ranges through the conservancy. For birders, Samburu holds over 360 species including Vulturine guineafowl, Bare-faced go-away bird, and Somali bee-eater.

Trunktrails Safaris includes Samburu in all northern Kenya itineraries precisely because the Special Five cannot be seen anywhere else in the country. For more on what to expect in the reserve, see our complete Samburu National Reserve safari guide and our Samburu Special Five guide.

What Activities Are Available at Sasaab Camp Samburu? 📸

Game drives are the anchor activity, running at dawn and late afternoon in open 4WD vehicles with Samburu community guides who carry multi-generational knowledge of the land. Ask your guide to track gerenuk on foot or explain the medicinal uses of the riverine plants. The answers will surprise you.

Beyond game drives, Sasaab offers:

  • Camel safaris through the thornbush with local Samburu herders, covering terrain that vehicles cannot reach
  • Sundowner drives to a ridge lookout with panoramic views north across the Ewaso Nyiro Valley
  • In-camp spa treatments using local herbs and botanicals sourced from the conservancy
  • Cultural visits to Samburu manyatta communities through the Westgate Conservancy community partnership
  • Night drives on conservancy land (not permitted inside Samburu National Reserve itself)
  • Swimming in the hilltop infinity pool with the river visible 30 metres below

The infinity pool earns its reputation. Guests report watching elephants cross the river from the pool edge, a glass of fresh passionfruit juice in hand, for an hour or more. It is the kind of moment that photographs cannot fully contain but stays with you for years.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sasaab Camp Samburu?

Samburu’s semi-arid climate makes it one of Kenya’s most reliable year-round destinations. Unlike the Masai Mara, which has a tight peak season driven by the Great Migration, Samburu stays productive across most of the calendar.

SeasonMonthsConditionsWildlife Viewing
Peak dryJun-AugCool mornings (15-20°C), warm afternoons (28-32°C)Outstanding: predators and elephants crowd the river
Second drySep-OctWarm and clearExcellent: migratory birds arrive; good predator activity
Short rainsNovLight showers, vivid green bushVery good: lower crowds, good value, dramatic skies
Dry spellDec-FebHot (30-36°C); very dryExcellent: animals concentrate at water sources
Long rainsMar-MayIntermittent rain; lush vegetationGood: lowest rates, fewest visitors, special atmosphere

The June to October dry season delivers the densest wildlife activity as the Ewaso Nyiro becomes the only reliable water for miles. Elephants, elephants, and more elephants cross in front of camp daily during this period. December and January are also outstanding, though midday temperatures push into the mid-thirties.

How Do You Get to Sasaab Camp in Samburu?

Sasaab lies approximately 340 km north of Nairobi inside the Westgate Community Conservancy, near the northern boundary of Samburu National Reserve.

By air (recommended):

  • Depart from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Samburu (Ngutuk Ongiron) Airstrip or Sasaab’s own private airstrip
  • Flight time: approximately 60 minutes
  • Scheduled daily services with SafariLink and Tropic Air Kenya
  • Sasaab vehicles meet guests airside for the short 15-minute transfer to camp

By road:

  • Drive north via Nanyuki on the A2 Highway, then continue north through Isiolo
  • Journey time from Nairobi: approximately 5 to 6 hours
  • The final 50 km from Archer’s Post onto the conservancy is dirt track; a 4WD is advisable
  • A popular stop en route is Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Nanyuki for a night before continuing north

Most guests on tours and safaris through our northern Kenya circuits fly in and return to Nairobi or connect onward to other destinations. Our 7-day northern Kenya safari from Samburu to Lake Turkana is a favourite circuit combining Sasaab with the remote jade-green shores of Lake Turkana.
