5-Day Lamu & Masai Mara Fly-In: Swahili Old Town Meets the Big Five

Description

Most bush-and-beach safaris end at a resort. This one ends in a seven-hundred-year-old Swahili town where donkeys still outnumber cars, dhows still sail the channel at sunset, and the call to prayer drifts over coral-stone rooftops that UNESCO lists among the best-preserved in the world. Lamu is not a beach add-on; it is a destination in its own right, and pairing it with the Masai Mara makes the most distinctive five days Kenya can offer.

The Mara Leg

We fly from Nairobi's Wilson Airport straight onto a Masai Mara airstrip, trading a full driving day for an extra game drive. Two nights at a tented camp put you among the highest big-cat densities in Africa, with shared 4x4 game drives led by the camp's resident guides. In migration season the river crossings are minutes from camp.

The Lamu Leg

A morning flight connects the Mara to Lamu via Nairobi. Two nights in a restored Swahili house or boutique hotel in Shela give you time for the things Lamu does best: wandering the carved-door alleys of the Old Town, a sunset dhow cruise, grilled seafood eaten barefoot, and the twelve-kilometre empty beach beyond Shela village.

Good to Know

This itinerary is light on packing and paperwork: soft bags only for the light aircraft, fifteen-kilo limit, and every transfer is met. It runs year-round; the coast is calmest from October to March, and the Mara adds the Migration from July to October.
