The greatest bird spectacle in Africa now happens at two lakes, not one. Rising water pushed the famous flamingo super-flocks north from Nakuru to Bogoria, where more than a million birds can line the shore in season, wading between steam vents and erupting geysers. This weekend itinerary gives you both lakes, plus Nakuru's rhino, in two full days out of Nairobi.
Day One: Lake Nakuru's Big Game
Lake Nakuru National Park is the easiest place in Kenya to see both black and white rhino, often within an hour of the gate. Rothschild's giraffe, tree-climbing lions and huge buffalo share the acacia woodland, and the baboon cliff viewpoint gives you the lake, pink-edged with resident flamingoes, in one frame.
Day Two: Bogoria's Steam and Pink Horizon
An early start takes us an hour north, off the tourist circuit, to Lake Bogoria. The reserve road runs right along the shoreline: boiling springs and geysers on one side, flamingo flocks stretching to the horizon on the other, with fish eagles hunting overhead. It is one of the most photographed single views in the Rift Valley and still sees remarkably few visitors.
A Note on Season
Flamingo numbers move with the water. The flocks are usually strongest at Bogoria between June and February, and our guides check the week's counts before every departure so the day-two route follows the birds, not habit. The trip runs Saturday-Sunday by default but works any two consecutive days.
