Mount Longonot

Mount Longonot: The Crater Hike Every Kenya Traveller Should Add to Their Safari

There is a mountain in Kenya’s Rift Valley that most safari itineraries skip entirely. It sits between Nairobi and Lake Naivasha, clearly visible from the main road — a near-perfect volcanic cone rising out of the flat valley floor like something a child drew from memory. Most people glance at it from the car window and keep driving to the hippos.

Mount Longonot

That is their loss. Mount Longonot is one of the most satisfying day hikes in East Africa: a straightforward climb to a crater rim, a full loop around the edge, and views that stretch across the Rift Valley floor in every direction. On a clear day you can see Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate’s cliffs, and the distant ridge of the Aberdares. The whole thing takes 4-5 hours and costs less than USD 30.

For families with teens, active retirees, or anyone who wants a morning of movement before an afternoon on the lake, the mount longonot hike is the perfect complement to a Naivasha-based safari day.

What Is Mount Longonot?

Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano and the centrepiece of Mount Longonot National Park, which covers 52 square kilometres in the Great Rift Valley, about 60 kilometres northwest of Nairobi. The mountain rises to 2,776 metres above sea level — mount longonot altitude is high enough to produce noticeably cooler temperatures and stunning cloud effects, but not so high that altitude sickness is a concern for healthy visitors.

The volcano last erupted in the 1860s. It is classified as dormant rather than extinct — mount longonot steam vents inside the crater are still active, occasionally releasing sulphurous gas into the bowl. The crater floor supports a dense forest of figs, hagenia, and groundsel. Buffalo and the occasional leopard are known to use it.

The rim itself is the main event. It takes roughly 90 minutes to reach the crater rim from the trailhead. The full rim loop — 7.2 kilometres of trail along the crater edge — adds another 2-2.5 hours. Most hikers do both in a single morning.

The Mount Longonot Hike: A Step-by-Step Guide

Trailhead: The park gate and trailhead are on the eastern side of the mountain, accessed via a signposted turn-off from the Nairobi-Naivasha highway (A104). GPS: -0.9158, 36.4566. The gate is open daily from 06:00 to 18:00.

Distance and elevation:

SegmentDistanceElevation Gain
Gate to crater rim3.5 km580m
Rim loop (full)7.2 km~250m undulating
Total (out and back via rim)~14 km~830m

Difficulty: Moderate. The ascent is steep in sections and involves loose volcanic soil — good grip footwear is essential. The rim trail involves some exposed sections with significant drops into the crater on one side. Trekking poles are helpful but not essential.

Time required:

  • Rim only (no full loop): 2.5-3 hours round trip
  • Full rim loop: 4-5 hours total
  • Photography-focused: allow 5-6 hours

What to bring: 2 litres of water per person (no water on the mountain), sun protection, light layers (the rim is significantly colder than the valley floor), snacks, and sturdy lace-up shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not permitted on the trail by park rangers.

Mount Longonot National Park: Entrance Fees and Practicalities

Entrance fees (2026):

CategoryFee
Non-resident adultsUSD 26
Non-resident children (3-18 yrs)USD 15
East African residents (adults)KES 215
East African citizens (adults)KES 100

Fees are paid at the gate via eCitizen, M-Pesa, or cash. KWS ranger guides are available at the gate for an additional tip-based fee (standard KES 500-1000 per group). The guide is not mandatory but highly recommended if you want to learn about the mountain’s geology and ecology along the way.

Parking: Secure, supervised parking at the trailhead gate.

Mobile network: Safaricom and Airtel have coverage on the lower slopes and rim. The crater interior loses signal.

The Longonot Crater: What You See From the Rim 🌅

The longonot crater is approximately 1.8 kilometres in diameter and 180 metres deep. Standing on the rim and looking into it is genuinely dramatic — the forest below is so dense it looks solid, and the scale of the bowl takes a moment to register.

On the far western section of the rim, the trail reaches the highest point of the mountain (2,776m). Views from here extend north across the Rift Valley floor to Lake Naivasha’s glittering blue sheet, west toward the Mau Escarpment, and south toward Nairobi’s haze. On exceptionally clear mornings in January-February, the snow cap of Mount Kenya is visible on the northeastern horizon.

The steam vents referenced in many online searches (is mount longonot eruption quiet or explosive, is mount longonot have a quiet eruption) refer to the fumarolic activity within the crater — jets of steam and sulphur gas that rise from cracks in the crater floor. The eruption type, for the geology-curious, is effusive (quiet lava flows) rather than explosive. The 1860s eruption was not catastrophic. The steam you see today is residual geothermal activity, not precursor behaviour.

Combining Mount Longonot With Lake Naivasha: The Perfect Full Day

The classic Naivasha day trip pairs mount longonot naivasha in a single outing that covers both land and water in one satisfying day. The mountain and the lake are 17 kilometres apart by road.

Suggested full-day itinerary:

TimeActivity
06:30Depart Nairobi / Naivasha hotel
07:00Gate entry, start ascent
09:30Reach crater rim
10:30Complete rim loop, begin descent
11:30Back at gate, change shoes, snack break
12:30Drive to Lake Naivasha
13:00Lunch at a lakeside restaurant (Crater Lake Camp or Crayfish Camp)
14:30Boat safari on Lake Naivasha — hippos, fish eagles, pelicans
16:30Optional: Crescent Island walking safari (see Hippos at 2m distance)
17:30Depart for Nairobi (90-minute drive)

This combination — a morning of vertical adventure on the volcano and an afternoon of flat, lake-level wildlife watching — covers completely different terrain types in a single day and gives mixed-energy groups something for everyone.

Wildlife on Mount Longonot: What Might Cross Your Path 🦒

The park’s wildlife is not the primary draw — it is the mountain itself — but encounters are possible and add genuine texture to the day.

On the lower slopes and plains: zebra, eland, Maasai giraffe, kongoni, and Grant’s gazelle graze the flat grassland between the trailhead and the forest line. Buffalo are seen regularly in small herds, particularly in the early morning. Hyena tracks are common on the trail.

In the crater forest: Leopard are present but rarely seen — the dense fig forest provides ideal cover and the cats are most active at night. Black-and-white colobus monkey occasionally move through the upper forest zone. Olive baboons are common.

Birdlife: 68 species have been recorded in the park. Augur buzzard, Verreaux’s eagle, and Mackinder’s eagle-owl are the headline species. Sunbirds and weavers are abundant on the rim vegetation.

The Trunktrails Advantage: Planning Your Longonot Hike With Local Guides

Trunktrails Safaris runs mount longonot national park excursions as standalone day trips from Nairobi or as add-ons to longer Rift Valley circuits. Our guides are physically active and knowledgeable — they have summited this mountain enough times to know which sections of trail to take slowly and where the best photographic positions on the rim are for each time of day.

We run Longonot as a standalone day trip (USD 150 per person from Nairobi including transport, park fees, and guide) or as part of a Rift Valley multi-day circuit. That circuit combines Hell’s Gate, Crescent Island, and Longonot into a 2-day adventure package — one of our most popular tours and safaris for active families.

For families doing their first Kenya safari, the Longonot hike is the element that teenagers actually remember. It is physical enough to feel like an accomplishment, spectacular enough to generate good stories, and short enough to fit within a day without disrupting the rest of the itinerary.

Trunktrails tours and safaris cover the entire Kenya safari spectrum — from mountain hikes and crater lakes to the Masai Mara river crossings and Amboseli super tuskers. We are TRA licensed, Nairobi-based, and built for the kind of travel that produces memories rather than just kilometres.

Practical Tips: Mount Longonot in Different Seasons

Best conditions: January-March and July-September. Dry trails, clear skies, and sharp rim views. The morning light from the east-facing trailhead is excellent for photography during these months.

Rainy season (April-June, October-November): The hike is possible but the trail becomes slippery on the steep upper section. Mist frequently obscures the rim views. If you go during rains, bring a waterproof jacket and expect mud. The crater can be spectacular in low cloud.

Temperature: The valley floor is typically 20-28C. The rim can be 8-12C cooler, especially with wind. A light fleece or windbreaker is not optional at higher elevations.

Sunrise hikes: Available with advance arrangement through Trunktrails. A 05:00 gate entry on a clear morning puts you on the rim at sunrise — one of the finest views in Kenya. This requires the park gate to open early, which KWS can facilitate for booked groups.
