When Is the Best Time to Plan a Kenya and Rwanda Safari?

June to September is the strongest overlap. Both countries are in dry season. Road conditions are good, the skies are clear, and gorilla trekking visibility in the Virunga forest is excellent. July to October also covers the Mara’s Great Migration river crossing season, when the drama peaks. Rwanda permit demand is at its highest during this window, so book permits at least 4 to 6 months ahead.
December to February is a second strong option. Rwanda’s short dry season runs from December to mid-February. In Kenya, this is a warm shoulder season with excellent wildlife viewing in the Mara and very manageable crowd levels. Gorilla permits are easier to secure.
Avoid planning the Kenya leg in April and May. Long rains in Kenya can make game drives muddy and some airstrips temporarily close. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is possible year-round but forest trails are slippery from March onwards.
How Do You Get From the Masai Mara to Rwanda?

Step 1: Take a morning flight from your Mara airstrip back to Wilson Airport, Nairobi. Flight time is approximately 45 minutes. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), approximately 25km from Wilson via the Southern Bypass.
Step 2: Board a direct flight from JKIA to Kigali International Airport (KGL). RwandAir and Kenya Airways both operate multiple daily direct services. Flying time is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
Step 3: Drive from Kigali to Musanze (also called Ruhengeri), the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. Distance: approximately 115km via the RN4 highway. Drive time: 2 to 2.5 hours. Most high-end lodges include airport-to-lodge transfers.
