Kenya and Rwanda Safari: How to Combine the Mara With Gorilla Trekking šŸŒ

The moment you lock eyes with a mountain gorilla in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, you understand why people cross the world for that one hour. Add a sunrise game drive across the Masai Mara, lion cubs playing in golden grass 20 metres from your open 4×4, and you have the kind of trip that redefines what a safari can be.

Most travellers do not realise how easy a kenya and rwanda safari is to combine. The two capitals share direct daily flights. The flying time between Nairobi and Kigali is under two hours. In 10 to 12 days, you can stand in the Mara Triangle at first light and walk through ancient montane forest to find gorillas, all within a single itinerary.

Trunktrails Safaris builds exactly these kinds of multi-country tours and safaris, designed around your dates, budget, and what matters most to you. This guide shows you the real costs, the logistics, and the best way to sequence a kenya and rwanda safari so you waste zero days.

Why Should You Combine Kenya and Rwanda in One Safari Trip?

No single East African country offers both the open-savannah Big Five experience and mountain gorilla trekking. You need Kenya for the first and Rwanda for the second.

The Masai Mara gives you the Great Migration, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and Africa’s densest elephant corridors across a landscape that feels like the heart of every nature documentary you have ever watched. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda delivers something profoundly different: dense volcanic forest, mountain mist, and a face-to-face hour with a habituated gorilla family.

Combining both removes the need for a second long-haul flight on a future holiday. For travellers investing in a trip of this scale, doing Kenya and Rwanda together is not extravagant. It is the smart move.

What Can You See on a Masai Mara Safari?

The Masai Mara National Reserve covers approximately 1,510 km² of protected savannah in southwest Kenya, directly bordering Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem. Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the Mara River during the Great Migration, one of the largest animal movements on earth.

Lions are resident year-round. The Mara holds some of the highest lion densities in Africa, with prides defending territories across both the reserve and the surrounding private conservancies. Leopards patrol the riverine forest at night. Cheetahs use the open plains to the east. Black rhinos are occasionally sighted in the Mara Triangle, the western section managed by the Mara Conservancy.

The conservancies surrounding the reserve add an extra layer. Mara North, Olare Motorogi (~33,000 acres), and Mara Naboisho (~50,000 acres/145 km²) allow night drives and walking safaris, which are banned inside the national reserve itself. These conservancies are where the best-in-class camps are located.

Entry fees for Masai Mara: $100 per non-resident adult per day (January to June), $200 per day (July to December). Check our guide to the best time to visit Masai Mara for month-by-month conditions.

What Makes Rwanda Gorilla Trekking One of Africa’s Greatest Experiences?

Mountain gorillas survive in only three countries: Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. Of the three, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park offers the most well-developed infrastructure and the most straightforward access for international visitors.

The park covers approximately 160 km² of Virunga volcanic mountain forest along the borders with Uganda and DRC. There are currently 12 habituated gorilla families open to tourism. Permits are strictly capped at 8 visitors per family per day.

Each trek earns you exactly one hour in the presence of the gorillas once you find them. Finding them can take 30 minutes or half a day, depending on where the family has moved overnight. Your guide tracks them by nest signs and radio contact with trackers who are in the forest from dawn.

A Rwanda gorilla permit costs $1,500 per person, paid to the Rwanda Development Board. That figure is fixed and non-negotiable. Despite the price, permits sell out months ahead during the peak June-to-September window. Book early.

The physical trek ranges from easy to demanding. A moderate level of fitness handles most families. Your guide assesses the group on the morning of the trek and assigns families accordingly. šŸ“ø

How Many Days Do You Need for a Kenya and Rwanda Safari?

Ten to 12 days gives you a meaningful experience in both countries without rushing either one.

A 10-day kenya and rwanda safari itinerary might look like this:

  • Days 1-4: Masai Mara (fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, ~45 minutes; Airkenya or Safarilink)
  • Day 5: Morning flight back to Nairobi; same-day flight to Kigali (~1h 20min direct on RwandAir or Kenya Airways)
  • Days 6-9: Volcanoes National Park (gorilla trek on days 7 and 8; golden monkey trek optional)
  • Day 10: Return to Kigali; fly home or back to Nairobi

If you want to add Amboseli National Park for elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views, extend to 12 nights. Place Amboseli first (2 nights, road transfer from Nairobi via Namanga Gate, ~4 hours/240km), then fly to the Mara, then cross to Rwanda for 4 nights.

Our 5-day Masai Mara migration safari itinerary can serve as a standalone Mara leg. Trunktrails Safaris handles all cross-border logistics, including Rwanda Development Board permit applications, so you never need to contact the board directly.

What Does a Kenya and Rwanda Safari Cost?

When Is the Best Time to Plan a Kenya and Rwanda Safari?

The two countries’ seasons align well in two clear windows. šŸŒ…

June to September is the strongest overlap. Both countries are in dry season. Road conditions are good, the skies are clear, and gorilla trekking visibility in the Virunga forest is excellent. July to October also covers the Mara’s Great Migration river crossing season, when the drama peaks. Rwanda permit demand is at its highest during this window, so book permits at least 4 to 6 months ahead.

December to February is a second strong option. Rwanda’s short dry season runs from December to mid-February. In Kenya, this is a warm shoulder season with excellent wildlife viewing in the Mara and very manageable crowd levels. Gorilla permits are easier to secure.

Avoid planning the Kenya leg in April and May. Long rains in Kenya can make game drives muddy and some airstrips temporarily close. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is possible year-round but forest trails are slippery from March onwards.

How Do You Get From the Masai Mara to Rwanda?

This is the part most travellers worry about most. In practice, the logistics are straightforward once you have a fixed plan.

Step 1: Take a morning flight from your Mara airstrip back to Wilson Airport, Nairobi. Flight time is approximately 45 minutes. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), approximately 25km from Wilson via the Southern Bypass.

Step 2: Board a direct flight from JKIA to Kigali International Airport (KGL). RwandAir and Kenya Airways both operate multiple daily direct services. Flying time is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.

Step 3: Drive from Kigali to Musanze (also called Ruhengeri), the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. Distance: approximately 115km via the RN4 highway. Drive time: 2 to 2.5 hours. Most high-end lodges include airport-to-lodge transfers.

Total travel time from Mara camp to gorilla lodge: one long but very manageable day. Build in a half-day buffer by overnighting in Kigali on transit day. The city is clean, compact, and easy to enjoy for an evening. Trunktrails Safaris coordinates all of this as part of our cross-border tours and safaris packages, so you arrive at each destination with everything arranged.

What Are the Best Camps for a Kenya and Rwanda Safari?

Masai Mara, Kenya:

  • Governors’ Camp (Main Reserve, Mara River): Open since 1972, classic riverside setting; from ~$700-1,000/night
  • Bateleur Camp (Mara Triangle): Remote and exclusive; fly-camping add-ons available
  • Kicheche Mara Camp (Olare Motorogi Conservancy): Small-footprint camp, night drives, walking safaris

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda:

  • Bisate Lodge (Wilderness Safaris): 6 private villas, active forest reforestation programme; from ~$1,500/night all-inclusive
  • Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (Governors’ Association): 9 cottages, direct community benefit model; from ~$800/night
  • One&Only Gorilla’s Nest: 20 rooms, ultra-luxury, immediate park access

The gorilla experience itself is identical regardless of which camp you choose. The permit and the gorillas are the same. If budget is a constraint, allocate spend to the permit rather than the lodge.

What Is the Trunktrails Advantage?

Booking a multi-country safari across Kenya and Rwanda involves moving parts that trip up even experienced travellers: permit applications, cross-border flight sequencing, conservancy approvals, lodge transfers, and two currencies.

Trunktrails Safaris is a native Kenyan-owned operator based in Nairobi. We run tours and safaris across Kenya every day. Our team knows the Mara terrain, the conservancy permit systems, and the seasonal rhythms of the Mara River crossings from direct, ground-level experience. We work with trusted Rwanda ground partners who have been filing gorilla permit applications with the Rwanda Development Board for years.

Every Kenya and Rwanda safari we build is tailor-made. You are not joining a group tour. You deal directly with us, no middlemen, no agency mark-ups. Five percent of every booking goes to wildlife conservation in the regions you are visiting.

If you want your elephant in the Mara and your gorilla on the volcano in the same trip, this is where you plan it. 🐘
