Angama Mara Lodge: Suspended Above the Great Rift Valley ๐ŸŒ…

The Angama Mara lodge does not sit beside the Masai Mara. It sits above it. Perched 600 metres above the Mara Plains on the rim of the Great Rift Valley, this iconic tented camp gives you something no ground-level property can: the whole theatre of the Mara laid out below like a living map.

The name says it all. “Angama” means “suspended in mid-air” in Swahili. From the moment you step onto your private veranda, you understand why. The Mara Triangle stretches south into Tanzania. The Oloololo Escarpment drops away beneath your feet. On the right morning, you will watch hot-air balloons drifting through sunrise mist far below you. At Trunktrails Safaris, we design tours and safaris around moments exactly like this, and Angama Mara delivers them at a scale that is difficult to believe until you see it yourself.

What Is Angama Mara and Where Is It Located?

Angama Mara is a luxury tented lodge built in 2015 on the Oloololo Escarpment, above the Mara Triangle section of the Masai Mara ecosystem. It sits within a private conservancy that shares a direct boundary with the Mara Triangle, covering approximately 1,500 acres of escarpment habitat.

The lodge divides into two separate tented camps: Angama Mara I and Angama Mara II. Each has ten glass-fronted suites, giving the property 20 tents in total. Both camps operate independently. You do not share vehicles, dining, or game drives with guests from the other camp.

Getting here is easy from Nairobi:

  • By air: Wilson Airport to Ol Kiombo or Kichwa Tembo Airstrip. Flight time is approximately 55 to 65 minutes. A 20-minute road transfer climbs the escarpment to the lodge.
  • By road: Approximately 270 km via the B3 highway through Narok. Allow five to six hours from Nairobi.

The closest major town is Narok, roughly 150 km from the lodge.

Why Is the Great Rift Valley Setting So Extraordinary?

The Great Rift Valley runs 6,400 km from the Middle East to Mozambique. The Kenyan section is one of its most dramatic stretches. At Angama Mara, the escarpment drops approximately 600 metres from the lodge terrace to the valley floor below. The Mara Triangle, which covers 510 kmยฒ, lies entirely in your eyeline.

This elevation gives Angama Mara something that no plains-level camp can replicate. You look down onto the savannah. You watch herds moving from your veranda. When the river is running high in October, you can track wildebeest with binoculars crossing the Mara River from your tent.

The lodge also carries a piece of cinematic history. The famous “Out of Africa” picnic scene, filmed on this exact escarpment in 1985, is commemorated at a dedicated viewpoint on the property. Few places in Kenya carry that density of natural drama and cultural resonance at once.

What Activities Are Available at Angama Mara Lodge?

The Mara Triangle is managed by the Mara Conservancy, a non-profit body separate from the Narok County authority that runs the main reserve. Wildlife density in the triangle is consistently high. Twice-daily game drives form the backbone of every stay:

  • Morning and evening game drives inside the Mara Triangle (Big Five resident year-round)
  • Hot-air balloon safari at dawn over the Mara Plains, with champagne breakfast on the valley floor (indicative: from $450-$550 per person)
  • Guided bush walks on the private 1,500-acre conservancy (escarpment flora and fauna distinct from the plains)
  • Photography sessions with a dedicated in-house photography guide
  • Cultural visits to Maasai communities on the escarpment rim
  • Spa treatments using Maasai-sourced botanical ingredients
  • Private bush dining at the helicopter-pad sunset point

The dual-ecosystem access, escarpment walks and Mara Triangle drives in the same day, is one of Angama Mara’s clearest advantages over camps that can offer only one terrain type.

How Do Angama Mara I and Angama Mara II Compare?

Both camps share the same escarpment position and identical fit-out. The differences are practical:

Angama Mara I has a larger communal footprint: a main lounge, dining room, bar, library, and gym all face the valley. It suits travellers who want a sociable camp atmosphere.

Angama Mara II is quieter and better suited to couples or exclusive-use bookings. It has its own pool, private dining deck, and sunken lounge. Groups of up to 20 guests can take it over entirely as a private camp. Honeymooners frequently choose Angama Mara II for this reason.

Neither camp shares vehicles or staff schedules with the other.

Angama Mara is full-board and all-inclusive. The lodge does not publish rates publicly. Trunktrails Safaris can confirm current pricing and availability for your travel window.

What Wildlife Will You See at and Around Angama Mara? ๐Ÿ†

The Mara Triangle holds one of the highest predator densities in East Africa. Resident wildlife includes lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, and hippo along the Mara River. Giraffe, zebra, topi, and eland are found throughout the triangle year-round.

The critical seasonal event is the wildebeest crossing. Approximately 1.5 million wildebeest move through the greater Masai Mara ecosystem between July and October. The Mara River crossings take place along several sites inside the triangle. From Angama Mara’s escarpment, you can watch the river corridor with binoculars from your veranda. Down on the plains, our Mara tours and safaris are planned around daily water levels and herd positions, so you reach the right crossing point before the action starts.

For a deeper look at what drives the crossings and when to be at the water, see our Mara River crossing guide.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Angama Mara Lodge?

Every month on the Mara Triangle has something to offer. The character of the experience changes by season:

July to October: Peak season. The wildebeest crossings are the headline event, but big-cat sightings are also at their highest as resident predators hunt the herds. Book six to twelve months ahead for July and August.

January to March: Clear skies, drier conditions, and competitive rates. Predator activity remains strong because herds remain in the Mara ecosystem. This is one of the best seasons for photography.

April to June: Long rains bring vivid green landscapes and dramatic escarpment cloud formations. Wildlife disperses but the triangle stays productive. Rates are notably lower.

November: Short rains and a shoulder-season atmosphere. Newborn foals and calves attract large predator concentrations. Rates sit between the high and low bands.
