At 5am the Masai Mara is completely still. Then the balloon begins to fill, the burners ignite, and you rise silently above the grass as the sun crests the horizon behind you. For one hour you drift over the plains at the speed of the wind. Below you, elephant families move in single file through the red oat grass.
Wildebeest herds shift like a slow tide across the valley. Lions are visible in the open: all of it spread out beneath you in a way a game drive vehicle can never show you.
If you visit between July and October, you may catch the legendary Great Migration—thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving in synchronized waves across the savannah. There is nothing quite like floating quietly above this living river, witnessing the enormity and wild drama of the migration from the sky. Sometimes, your pilot will dip lower, giving you a closer look at lion prides on the hunt, leopards draped over tree branches, or the restless bustle around a hyena den. Every flight brings a new theatre of life below, and the perspective from above makes it all feel even more extraordinary.
Whether it’s the first rays of sun catching the horns of a buffalo or the sudden movement of a predator in the grass, your time in the balloon is both tranquil and thrilling—a once-in-a-lifetime lens on the Mara that reveals something different every morning.
When you land on the open savannah, a white-linen breakfast has been laid out on trestle tables: champagne, fresh fruit, eggs, coffee, the whole thing. Your pilot presents you with a certificate of flight. It is the kind of morning you describe for years. The balloon operates daily from inside the Masai Mara and can be added to any multi-day safari package we offer.
Behind the Scenes: Your Balloon Crew
Each balloon flight is a true team effort, involving an expert pilot and a ground crew of six—plus a dedicated support team of ten working behind the scenes to ensure everything unfolds seamlessly. In total, more than sixteen people are involved in making every flight possible, from careful inflation at dawn to landing and setting up your bush breakfast. Their skill and coordination keep the whole experience running smoothly, and support entire local families through every flight.
