Kenya Safari Lodges: Fast Access, Wide Price Range

Kenya’s flagship safari circuit runs through the Masai Mara National Reserve, a 1,510 square kilometre grassland in the country’s southwest. It sits roughly 270 km from Nairobi by road, a 4.5 to 5.5 hour drive through Narok. A 45-minute scheduled flight from Wilson Airport reaches one of the Mara’s airstrips (Keekorok, Ol Kiombo or Musiara).

That short flight time is Kenya’s biggest structural advantage. A traveler can land in Nairobi in the morning and be on a game drive in the Mara by afternoon. Add Amboseli National Park (240 km from Nairobi, Kilimanjaro views) or Lake Nakuru National Park (160 km, flamingos and rhino sanctuary) and Kenya offers a multi-park circuit inside a single week without long overland days.

Kenya’s lodge market is also unusually wide in price. You can book a $110-a-night tented camp and a $1,500-a-night private-conservancy villa in the same reserve, sometimes a few kilometres apart. Tanzania’s parks reward longer stays. Distances between camps are greater, so a Tanzania itinerary typically moves in 2-3 night blocks per lodge rather than Kenya’s tighter clustering. The lodge scene here also leans further upmarket on average, with fewer true budget options inside the parks themselves.

The main overland crossing is at Namanga, roughly 165 km south of Nairobi (about 3 hours) and about 110 km north of Arusha (about 2 hours). A private transfer between Nairobi and Arusha via Namanga typically takes 5 to 6 hours total.

For travelers short on time, regional carriers fly direct between Nairobi (Wilson Airport) and Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport in under an hour, avoiding the border crossing entirely. Combining the Masai Mara with the Serengeti on one itinerary also works well in July through September, when the wildebeest migration herds move between the two, following the Mara River crossings.

Best Time to Book Each Side

Kenya, Masai Mara: the driest months, late June through October, bring the wildebeest migration onto the Kenyan side of the ecosystem, with river crossings concentrated at the Mara River between July and September. December through March is warm and drier, good for general game viewing with lighter crowds and lower lodge rates.

Tanzania, Serengeti and Ngorongoro: the calving season runs January through March on the southern Serengeti plains, when over 400,000 wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks. The northern Serengeti holds migration herds from roughly June through August, just before they cross into Kenya. Ngorongoro Crater has resident game year-round, so it is a reliable add-on to any Tanzania itinerary regardless of season.
