Kenya Entry Requirements 2026: eTA, Visa-Free Nationalities and What to Expect at the Border šŸŒ

Kenya’s immigration system changed significantly in 2024 and the details still confuse travelers in 2026. The short version: Kenya moved from a traditional e-visa system to a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) model in late 2023, then announced phased visa-free access for all African Union countries. The practical effect on your safari trip depends on which passport you hold.

This guide from Trunktrails Safaris covers kenya electronic travel authorization procedures, which nationalities are visa-free in 2026, what the fees are, how the system works in practice, and what to expect at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other entry points. Trunktrails Safaris runs Kenya tours and safaris for travelers from over 30 countries and we walk every client through entry requirements before departure.

Kenya’s Current Immigration System: eTA vs Visa-Free

Kenya’s entry system in 2026 operates on two tracks:

Track 1: Visa-Free Entry Citizens of African Union member states (55 countries, including all of sub-Saharan Africa) do not require a visa or eTA to enter Kenya. They present their passport at arrival and are granted a 90-day tourist stay. This policy was implemented in phases from 2024 onwards and is fully operational in 2026 for all AU member states.

Separately, Kenya has bilateral visa-free agreements with a small number of non-African countries, including several Caribbean nations and some Commonwealth partners. Check the Immigration Department of Kenya’s official website for the current full list.

Track 2: Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) Citizens of countries not covered by visa-free access must apply for a Kenya eTA before travel. This replaced the previous e-Visa system. The eTA is applied for online, approved (or declined) before travel, and presented digitally or as a printed PDF at the port of entry.

How to Apply for a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization

The application is online. The process takes 20 to 40 minutes and approval typically comes within 24 to 72 hours, though it can be faster.

Step 1: Go to the official portal. Use ecitizen.go.ke or etakenya.go.ke. Do not use third-party sites that charge service fees on top of the government fee. Several middlemen sites charge USD 60 to 100 to process what is a USD 34 application.

Step 2: Create an account or log in. First-time applicants need to register an email address and verify it.

Step 3: Complete the application form. You will need:

  • Valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Kenya)
  • Passport-quality photo (clear, white background)
  • Travel dates and accommodation address for first night in Kenya
  • Return ticket information or evidence of onward travel
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from an endemic country

Step 4: Pay the fee. Credit/debit card or M-Pesa for Kenyan residents. USD or equivalent.

Step 5: Receive approval. You will receive an email with your eTA approval document. Print this out. While the document is digital, immigration officers at Kenyan airports frequently ask for a printed copy. Do not rely on showing it on your phone if the officer requests a printed version.

Apply at least 2 weeks before travel. Most applications are processed in 24-72 hours, but during busy periods (December, August, Easter) processing can take longer. Do not apply the day before departure.

What to Expect at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO)

JKIA is the primary entry point for international safari travelers. The immigration experience in 2026:

Arrival hall: Follow signs for “Immigration.” Non-residents join the foreign passport queue. If you are connecting to a domestic flight to Wilson Airport (Mara, Samburu, Amboseli), you clear immigration and customs first, collect luggage, and then check in for the domestic flight at the adjacent domestic terminal.

Immigration desk: The officer will check your eTA approval document (or verify your visa-free status), your passport validity, and may ask about your accommodation. Have the address of your first night’s hotel or camp ready — even a safari camp name is fine.

Arrival card: Kenya no longer requires a paper arrival card at JKIA. The eTA application serves this function.

Customs: Standard limits: 1 litre spirits, 200 cigarettes, personal effects. Wildlife products and agricultural items are controlled. Do not bring undeclared wildlife souvenirs from other countries through Kenyan customs.

Duration of stay granted: Tourists are typically granted 90 days on arrival. The officer will stamp your passport with the permitted period. Check the stamp before leaving the desk — errors happen.

Other Entry Points Used by Safari Travelers

Wilson Airport (WIL): Nairobi’s domestic airport. Not an international port of entry. You must clear JKIA first, then transfer to Wilson for domestic flights. Allow a minimum of 3 hours between an international arrival and a domestic connecting flight.

Moi International Airport (MBA) — Mombasa: Used by travelers doing a coastal component after safari. eTA requirements identical to JKIA. The immigration experience here is generally faster than JKIA.

Malaba and Namanga Land Borders: Used for overland travelers coming from Uganda or Tanzania respectively. eTA is required for non-visa-free nationalities crossing land borders. Arrivals from Tanzania via Namanga are common for combined Serengeti/Masai Mara itineraries. The crossing itself takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on queue length. Note: the land crossing format is less digitised than the airport experience; have all documents printed and ready.

Eldoret International Airport (EDL): Occasionally used for charter arrivals to Laikipia/northern Kenya. Full immigration clearance at Eldoret for international arrivals.

Kenya Entry Requirements: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Using a third-party eTA site: Dozens of commercial sites charge double the government fee to process Kenya eTAs. They are not illegal but they are unnecessary. Use the official ecitizen.go.ke portal.

Not printing the eTA approval: Officers at JKIA have been known to turn travelers back to the queue if they cannot produce a printed copy. Print it.

Passport valid less than 6 months: Kenya requires 6 months validity beyond your intended departure. A passport expiring 4 months from now will be refused.

Yellow fever certificate country confusion: If you are transiting through a yellow-fever-endemic country (even a brief transit), Kenya may require the certificate on arrival. This applies even if your origin country is not endemic.

Assuming land border crossing with eTA means faster processing: The land border process at Namanga or Malaba involves physical document checks that take longer than the digital JKIA process. Build time into an overland entry day.

Extending Your Kenya Stay

If you want to stay beyond the 90 days granted at arrival, you must apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration Services in Nairobi (Upper Hill, off Ngong Road). Extensions are granted in 30-day or 90-day increments for tourists. The application requires your current passport, the departure note from your arrival stamp, a completed application form, and payment of the extension fee.

For safari tour itineraries, 90 days is almost always sufficient.
